Rob Lanier Released from SMU Coaching Duties Despite 20-Win Season

SMU dismisses basketball coach Rob Lanier after a 20-win season and NIT loss, ahead of ACC transition.

BollywoodFever, March 21: SMU has parted ways with men’s basketball coach Rob Lanier, making the announcement on Thursday following the team’s exit from the NIT and a season that saw them secure 20 wins, according to various reports.

Lanier’s tenure at SMU spanned two seasons, with the team showing significant improvement from a 10-22 record in his inaugural season to a commendable 20-13 (11-7 in the American Athletic Conference) this season. Their campaign concluded with a 101-92 defeat against Indiana State in the NIT, a team that showcased a performance level on par with NCAA Tournament contenders.

At 55, Lanier boasts a coaching resume that includes head coaching roles at Siena from 2001 to 2005 and at Georgia State from 2019 to 2022, accumulating a career record of 141-135. He successfully guided both teams to NCAA Tournament berths.

Between his head coaching positions at Siena and Georgia State, Lanier contributed as an assistant coach to the programs at Virginia, Florida, Texas, and Tennessee. Looking ahead, SMU is set to transition into the Atlantic Coast Conference in the upcoming season.
