Hyundai and Kia Recall 3.4 Million Vehicles Due to Fire Risk, Repairs Delayed

Hyundai and Kia issued a recall for 3.4 million vehicles in the United States in September, advising owners to park their cars outdoors due to a risk of catching fire, regardless of whether the engines were running.

Six months following the announcement, the majority of these vehicles remain unrepaired and continue to pose a risk to owners, their families, and others, with potential for fires to affect garages, homes, or nearby vehicles.

The companies have indicated that most of the recalled vehicles are unlikely to be repaired before June, nearly nine months after the recall was initiated.

Despite being separate entities, Hyundai, which owns a stake in Kia, and Kia are facing one of the largest recalls in their history.

The cause of the fires has been linked to brake fluid leaking onto the antilock braking system’s circuit boards, causing an electrical short that can ignite the fluid.
