Huawei Reports $560 Million in Patent Revenues for the Previous Year

In a speech at its headquarters in Shenzhen, Huawei Technologies, the Chinese tech giant, disclosed that it received $560 million in royalty revenues in 2022, according to Alan Fan, the company’s head of intellectual property (IP).

Fan mentioned that due to a decline in handset sales, Huawei paid out less in royalties to other IP holders, resulting in earning more than it paid out in royalties over the past two years.

Huawei further stated that it has established patent licenses with phone manufacturers such as Samsung and Oppo, as well as with automakers including Audi, Mercedes Benz, BMW, Porsche, Subaru, Lamborghini, and Bentley.

The company highlighted that it invested $23 billion in research and development last year, with a significant portion of its 114,000-strong workforce (55% of the total) dedicated to research activities.

Since 2019, Huawei has faced multiple rounds of U.S. restrictions after being labeled a security risk by authorities. These restrictions have limited the company’s access to chipmaking tools. Huawei, however, firmly denies being a security risk.
